About Chess
Play chess online for free against the Stockfish AI engine, or share a device for a two-player hot-seat match. Pick a difficulty from Beginner to Master — Stockfish adjusts its strength on the fly. The board uses standard rules: castling, en passant, promotion, and the fifty-move draw.
Pondernook chess is built for quick five-minute sessions when you want to think but don't want to commit to a tournament timer. No signup, no install, no ads chasing you between moves — the game loads in your browser and runs entirely on your device. If you're learning, drop the difficulty and use undo to explore alternate lines; if you're sharpening up, push Stockfish to Hard and try not to drop material. Works on desktop, tablet, and phone.
Frequently asked questions
How strong is the chess AI?
The opponent is the Stockfish engine running locally in your browser, set anywhere from Beginner to Master. At Master it plays well above club level; at Beginner it deliberately makes weak, quick moves so newcomers can win.
Can I take back a move?
Yes. The Undo button steps back your last move (and the engine's reply), so you can explore alternative lines as much as you like.
Can I play against a friend instead of the computer?
Yes — pick “2-player (hot-seat)” to share one screen, or use the online panel to host a game and play a friend remotely with a join code.
